Amongst the awards were prizes for ‘Best Homecoming Event’, ‘Best Major Event’ and ‘Best Achievement for Argyll’. The awards recognised many aspects of culture, a number of local achievements and the pride of Argyll. The Royal National Mod was amongst the winners picking up ‘Best Major Event’ and St Columba Ceilidh Trail winning the ‘Best Homecoming Event’ category. The Mod, a showcase of Gaelic tradition and talent, saw record figures of youngsters this year as over 2000 children took part in the junior competitions that took place in Oban in 2009. The St Columba Ceilidh Trail allowed youngsters from Scotland and Ireland to tour the two Celtic nations in the footsteps of St Columba and swap traditional Gaelic and Irish songs and showcasing the very best in young talent. The influence of Gaelic within the winners is apparent and demonstrates that people are appreciating the culture in the Argyll district and recognising Gaelic as part of that culture.
